- Our first consideration must always be SAFETY. Protect your training partner!
- Students must maintain control at all times. Physically and emotionally.
- Students are encouraaed to leave their egos at the front door when they bow in for training. Any display of anger and/or loss of control while training will result in the student's dismissal from the class.
- No sparring will be permitted without the presence of an adult Black Belt Instructor to monitor the class.
- Students will not be allowed to have any contact while sparring without a complete set of sparring gear, including: hands, feet, headgear and mouthpieces.
- If an instructor observes any unsafe act, the instructor will loudly call out "Shio," at which time all students will immediately cease all activity and direct their attention to the Instructor.
- Any student who observes any unsafe activity should immediately bring this to the Instructor's attention.
- If a student is sparring with an overly aggressive student who is making face or excessive contact, the student should cease sparring with that individual and alert the Instructor.
- Contact is limited to a light touch of the Gi if the participants are wearing a complete set of sparring protective equipment. If either of the participants is not wearing a complete set of protective equipment, including mouth-guards, there will be no contact allowed, period.
- Direct face contact is prohibited during sparring and self-defense training.
- In the event of any type of injury or excessive pain, students must immediately notify an instructor.
- Students with any chronic injuries (joints, back injuries, strained muscles, etc) or any medical conditions should consult with a physician and also discuss the condition with Mr. Brannan and the class instructor prior to class. Students are encouraged to use good judgment when training and follow their doctor's advice. Do not aggravate and injury by trying to keep up with other students or instructors until your physician allows you to participate and you feel comfortable with the drill or exercise.
- During self-defense practice students must maintain control when using strikes and joint locking techniques to any part of their training partner's body.
- During the practice of joint locks and restraining holds, the student should "pat" his training partner to indicate discomfort or pain. The hold or technique must be immediately release when either of the participants "pats" the training partner, himself, or the mat.
- The throat is one of the most vulnerable areas of the body. Injuries to the thyroid cartilage (aka "the Adam's Apple") can result from a strike or from choking. Although our advanced students are taught techniques an adversary may use such as cartoid restraints and choking attacks, this is done in order to teach the students techniques of self-defense against such attacks.
- Students must never strike toward another student's throat. Strikes, chokes or any pressure to the throat is strictly prohibited!
